What Is Urology?

The National Kidney Foundation reports that kidney and urologic diseases affect more than 13 million people (about five percent of the US population) and claim about 260,000 lives annually.

The number of people affected by these diseases is expected to grow as the populations of older adults and racial and ethnic minorities, those groups disproportionately affected by the diseases, expand.

The medical team at Orange Coast Urology specializes in the full spectrum of urologic conditions, where they manage and treat both non-surgical problems such as urinary infections, and surgical problems such as the correction of congenital abnormalities and the surgical management of cancers. Such abnormalities within the genital region are called genitourinary disorders.

The most serious and debilitating of kidney and urinary tract diseases include:

  • End-stage renal disease (ESRD)
  • Stone disease
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Bladder stones
  • Bladder cancer
  • Cystitis
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Incontinence
  • Kidney cancer
  • Prostatitis
  • Prostate cancer
  • Testicular cancer

Our team of doctors all deal with urinary tract infection, cancer of the urinary system, and surgery of congenital problems. They also diagnose and treat incontinence, and are experienced in endoscopy (surgery that involves a scope enabling the surgeon to view the surgery area inside the body).

Urology incorporates a surgical specialty focusing on the urinary tracts of males and females, and on the reproductive system of males. Orange Coast Urology's team of doctors are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders. The organs that urologists focus on include:

  • Kidneys
  • Ureters
  • Urinary bladder
  • Urethra
  • Male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis)
